The ISTVS (International Society for Terrain-Vehicle Systems) has a prominent history of more than 50 years. The Society hosts researchers, professors, experts from all around the world, specializing in vehicle technology, theory of land locomotion, agricultural-, military-, forestry vehicles as well as in planetary vehicle-robots. International conferences of ISTVS are organized every third year and each event hosts participants from all of the world. Between the international events, the Society holds regional conferences every year. In 2017 the conference will be joint, international and regional as well. The 19th International Conference of the ISTVS will be hosted in Budapest. This city is the Pearl of Danube, the largest and most exciting metropolis in Central-Eastern Europe, the city of cultural diversity, rich history, beautiful architecture, friendly people, thermal waters and wonderful, relaxing spas. The organiser – Szent Istvan University – is one of Hungary’s most prominent institutions of higher education in agricultural sciences, agricultural machinery and theory of land locomotion. The international airport of Budapest (terminals 2A, 2B) connects the city directly to some overseas and to all important European destinations. The three main railway stations (Déli, Keleti, Nyugati) are either terminations or stops of many intercity trains from west and east, south and north. There are several international coach services to Budapest. Motorists can also reach Budapest easily on the European motorway network. ### Travel to Budapest by Air There are daily direct flights from most European and from some North American cities. [Liszt Ferenc Airport](http://www.bud.hu/english) is situated on the SE margin of Budapest, 20 km from the city centre and is a popular destination for many low fare air carriers. The [Airport Minibus service](https://www.minibud.hu/en) is relatively cheap and reliable. Public transport buses ([#200E](http://www.bkk.hu/en/timetables/#200E), air conditioned, circulate between the terminals and the Kőbánya-Kispest terminal of the [Metro line 3](http://www.bkk.hu/en/timetables/#M3) (“blue line”) at 8-15 minute intervals in daytime. No translation is provided. ### Electricity The electricity is 230 V, 50 Hz. Japanese, UK, USA and other visitors: please note that in Hungary Continental European [German-style CEE7/4 sockets](http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/f/) (“Schuko sockets“) are used, which also accepts [CEE7/16 “Europlugs“](http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/c/). ### Tap Water Tap water is filtered and purified and safe to drink. ### Foreign Exchange, Banking Facilities The official national Hungarian currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). All the major credit cards are accepted in Hungary in places displaying the emblem at the entrance. Though Hungary is a member of the European Union, only a few shops and restaurants accept Euros (EUR) for payment. Currency exchange booths are available in Budapest at the airport terminals, railway stations, travel agencies, banks and various places in the city. The exchange rates applied may vary. Major credit cards are usually accepted in most hotels, restaurants and certain shops in the city. Obtaining cash against ATM or credit cards is very easy from the ATM cash machines that can be found at almost each bank office, hotel or on the street. ### Liability and Insurance The organisers cannot accept liability for any personal accidents, loss of belongings or damage to private property of participants and accompanying persons that may occur during the Conference. Participants are advised to make their own arrangements to obtain health, travel and property insurance before their departure to Hungary. ### Shopping in Budapest (opening hours) Opening hours of most shops are generally between 10 AM and 6 PM on workdays, and until 1 PM on Saturdays. Some shops and supermarkets are open on Sunday too. The shopping malls are a general exception, as their opening times are uniform for all shops in a given mall, and are longer than usual: Monday through Saturday 9 AM – 9 PM, Sunday 10 AM – 7 PM. Some larger supermarkets, such as Tesco, have units that are open 24 hours a day. * Office hours: generally from 8 AM – 4 PM Mon – Fri. * Post offices: Mon – Fri: 8 AM – 6 PM, Sat: 8 AM – 1 PM * Banks: Mon – Thu: 8 AM – 3 PM, Fri: 8 AM – 1 PM. ### Taxis in Budapest Budapest taxis have yellow number plates and a taxi sign in yellow. Any vehicle without these features is operating illegally. It’s a good idea to avoid drivers who volunteer their services but don’t have a registered taxi sticker on their car. This can prevent unpleasant surprises when it comes time to pay. All cars must have a taximeter installed, and these also print out a receipt. Taxi drivers are required to give an invoice on request. Tipping: in general 10% of the fare is acceptable. The total charge that has to be paid by the passenger is made up of three separate parts: the basic charge, which is irrespective of how far the journey is, presently HUF 450 during day and night, a per kilometre charge which depends on how many kilometres are covered during the journey HUF 280/km, and the waiting charge which is HUF 70/min. From 1 September 2013 a new regulation came to force which regulates the taxi fares. No fixed, shuttle or pre-agreed prices are available any more. ### Telephone The international code for Hungary is 36, the area code for Budapest is 1. To call a number within Hungary, first dial +36 or 0036. Budapest telephone numbers have seven digits; all other areas have six digits (in addition to the area codes). To make an international call from Hungary, first dial 00, then the country code followed by the area code and the subscriber’s telephone number. It is named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975–1038), whose supposed right hand is housed in the reliquary. It was the sixth largest church building in Hungary before 1920. Since the renaming of the primatial see, it’s the co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest. The historic centre of Veszprém is the castle, which – together with the surrounding town – was one of the significant centres of our country until the Turkish occupation: it was the King’s and Queen’s seat and an Episcopal seat. The medieval castle and town suffered large-scale destruction in the Turkish period. Its patrons are the Virgin Mary and Saint Aignan of Orleans. Its deed of foundation is the oldest coherent Hungarian written record to survive in its original form. The most impressive parts of the building complex are the library and the refectory in the southern wing. The refectory’s vaulting is decorated with murals framed with stucco, depicting saints of the Benedictine Order and the House of Árpád as well as other Hungarian monarchs. First and foremost the location of the town captures everyone: tender mountains on the north, the beautiful lake on the south embrace the town, which radiates that special Transdanubian serenity for ages. The town was inhabited already when the Romans conquered parts of Hungary. Walking in the town the visitor every now and then faces relics of old times.
